On the occasion of the World Remembrance Day, candlelight vigil was held in Bogra on 17 November 2024 to commemorate those killed and injured in road crashes. More than fifty people of different ages and professions participated in this creative program to raise awareness at Shaheed Khokon Park in the city on Sunday evening.
Organized by Steps Towards Development, a coordination meeting of the Policy Influence Group was also held on the same day afternoon at Hotel La-Vista in Jaleswaritala in the city under the “Strengthening Road Safety Act and Civil Society Action in Bangladesh” project demanding the enactment of a road safety law to ensure safe roads.
Chaired by Advocate Mozammel Haque and conducted by the project mentor Sheikh Abu Rahat Md. Mashruful Islam, the meeting and candlelight vigil were attended by Coordinator of Steps Towards Development Shaheda Ferdousi Munni, former panel mayor of Bogra Municipality Aminul Farid, assistant director of Islamic Foundation Bogra Sajedur Rahman, PUP Chief Coordinator Sheikh Md. Abu Hasanat Sayeed, former municipal councilor Khorshed Alam, Advocate Golam Dastagir Sarkar, Advocate Ashrafunnahar Swapna, journalists Syed Fazle Rabbi Dollar, Sanju Roy and Tahera Zaman Lipi, cultural activists Niva Sarkar Purnima, Rommana Khatun, PUP Program Officer Nilufa Yasmin and administrative officer Abul Hasnat, among others.
The speakers at the meeting said that this is the first time that World Road Crash Remembrance Day is being celebrated in Bogra. It is an important global event, where millions of people who have died and been seriously injured in road accidents are remembered. It also recognizes the suffering of the victims, their families and communities affected by these accidents. Students from different schools and colleges of Bogra also participated enthusiastically in this creative program.
